Watch: man-eater leopardess, who killed a 4-year-old girl, caught after 12-day hunt in Kashmir

Twelve days after a leopard mauled a 4-year-old girl to death in Jammu and Kashmir’s Budgam district, a search operation by the wildlife officials at various hotspots of the area was able to nab the man-eater wild cat.

Officials of the wildlife department said that the leopardess was caught in the nursery next to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office in the Central district much to the relief of locals.

The leopardess was spotted last week by locals and armed forces inside the Deputy Commissioner’s office premises but wildlife officials didn’t receive any information about the presence of the animal in the area since then.

“Search operation continued from the last twelve days and staff had been deployed at every hotspot to eliminate or nab this man-eater leopard,” an official said.

“We deputed teams at hotspots like Rangreth, DC complex, Ichgam, Khanpora, Qazibagh and Gudsathoo to either catch or kill the animal.

In fact, authorities started the cleaning process of nursery at DC complex but couldn’t find the leopard again,” an official said on Monday.

But early on Tuesday the wild cat was spotted in the nursery early Tuesday morning and was tranquillized.

Officials said teams were placed around 10 kilometres from the place of the incident in Ompura in which a 4-year-old was killed by the animal and 15 cages, cable traps, in the nursery and nearby locality were placed.

20 shooters were deputed at vulnerable spots to kill the leopard.

“We also placed camera traps to record the movement of the leopardess, however since Tuesday last week there was no trace of her,” an official said.

Meanwhile, the district forest officer said that the work was on a war footing basis on the 160 Kanal of the nursery and 40 per cent of the fallen trees were removed from the nursery while 30 per cent of thinning and branch cutting was also done.

He said that area is being properly sanitised by the officials, to prevent any untoward incident in the future.

Earlier on June 3, a four-year-old girl was mauled to death by the leopardess after she was taken away by the man-eater from her home in Ompora Housing Colony in Budgam.
