Two militants slain as gunfight rages in Anantnag forests, searches continue

Two pro-freedom militants were slain in an encounter with government forces in a forest area of Anantnag district in Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.

Reports said government forces launched a cordon and search operation in Shalgul forests in Srigufwara following input about the presence of militants.

A joint team of Police, Indian Army’s 3 Rashtriya Rifles and paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force launched a cordon and search operation on specific information about the presence of militants,” an unnamed police official told reporters in Srinagar.

He said that as the joint team of forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, triggering a gunfight.

Reports said a search operation is underway in the remote area where there are scant communication facilities.

While the identity of the slain militants was not confirmed yet, some reports claimed the duo was part of Jaish-e-Muhammad.
