Snow fury in Kashmir: over 70 structures damaged, 30 in Srinagar alone

An Indian paramilitary officer and a woman from north were killed while another woman was injured and over 70 residential houses and other structures including two Mosques were damaged across the Kashmir Valley on Wednesday due to heavy snowfall.

A Central Reserve Police Force Sub Inspector was killed after a shed collapsed at a former legislator’s house in Hazratbal area of Srinagar.

The paramilitary officer HC Murmu of 115 battalion was injured after a shed collapsed due to snowfall at former Hazratbal legislator Syed M Akhoon’s residence.

He was declared brought dead at a hospital. 

Similarly, an elderly woman died after she came under a snow slide in Trehgam village of Kupwor district.

An official said that 81-year-old Rahami Begum died on the spot in Shah Mohallah after she came under a snow which fell from the rooftop of her house. 

Shagufta, a woman from Anchar in Sovur was injured when a residential house got damaged.

Reportedly many residential houses, shops, commercial structures and the vehicles were damaged due to the snowfall across Kashmir.

The heavy snowfall damaged over 70 structures, mostly residential houses across the Valley, a report noted.

Two Mosques in Qalamdanpora and Zoonmar were also damaged in Srinagar due to incessant snow.

In Srinagar district nearly 30 residential houses, shops and other structures were damaged.  

Similarly in southern districts, nearly two dozen structures including residential houses were damaged in four south Kashmir districts.

In Varmul, at least seven structures and sheds were partially or fully damaged in Boniyar and Uri. 

In Budgam, three residential houses were damaged due to heavy snowfall. Reports said two shops located at main market in Chodur were also damaged.

In Ganderbal and Kupwor district, four residential houses were damaged.
