Station House Officer of Rajouri Police Station was on Saturday allegedly manhandled by Army men on Mughal Road while people stage protest, alleging that they are facing undue harassment while travelling along the road.

Reports said that SHO Rajouri Sameer Jillani was on Mughal Road when Army deployed on the Poshana Army check post and a police officer entered into a verbal duel.

“It has come to the fore that SHO has been manhandled to a greater extent,” police officials said. Wishing anonymity, they said that manhandling of the officer has created a wave of resentment among police cadres in Rajouri and Poonch who are demanding action as per law in this incident.

Senior officers of both Police and Army later rushed to the spot for further inquiry into the matter.

“Blockade of Mughal Road has reached such obnoxious levels that even a serving @JmuKmrPolice officer posted in Rajouri who was travelling to enquire about the welfare of his mother in Srinagar was allegedly manhandled by the army. Families in Pir Panchal & Kmr affected due to blockade,” the PDP tweeted.

The soldiers allegedly pounced on the SHO who was in civvies when his private car passed by some waiting vehicles. The SHO was allegedly roughed up despite having introduced himself as a police officer, the officials said.

“In connection with today’s incident of manhandling of a police officer at Poshana check post on Mughal road, FIR No. 234/2021 under relevant sections of law has been registered in police station Surankote against the said personnel,” the police said in a statement.
