A cordon and search operation by the government forces in a Srinagar locality triggered an anti-India demonstration on Thursday.
Witnesses told the Voice of Kashmir that government forces on Thursday late afternoon launched a search operation in Mirjanpora in the Old City of Srinagar. But as the forces cornered the locality near Eidgah, pro-freedom youth hurled stones at them amid anti-India sloganeering.
Stone battles between youth and government forces continued for hours, witnessed said, adding: the forces resorted to tear gas and pepper gas shelling at the demonstrators.
Witnesses said the forces called off the searches due to the clashes.
Witnesses from Gojwara also reported clashes between youth and government forces. “A group of youth clashed with police and paramilitary late in the afternoon,” a local shopkeeper told the Voice of Kashmir.
