Policeman, non-local worker shot dead in Kulgam

A police constable and a non-local were killed in two separate shootings suspected to be carried out by militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Friday, officials said in the summer capital Srinagar.

The officials said that unidentified militants fired upon a police constable near Shamford School in the southern district, leaving him severely wounded.

The injured police constable, Bantu Sharma, was shifted to the hospital, however, he succumbed on the way, they said.

Bantu Sharma, a resident of Wanpoh, was working as follower in J&K police, the officials said.

Soon after suspected militants shot Sharma from a close range, government forces carried out searches and cordoned off the area but the attackers managed to flee.

A police spokesman in a statement said that at 6 pm, they received information about the shooting and senior police officials rushed to the spot.

“Preliminary investigation have revealed that militants fired indiscriminately at Sharma and he sustained grievous bullet injuries and was shifted to hospital for the treatment, where he succumbed,” the police spokesman said,

“Investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of the attack,” the spokesman said.

Several pro-India leaders including former chief ministers condemned the killing of policeman. “I unequivocally condemn the militant attack. May his soul rest in peace,” tweeted Omar Abdullah.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti also tweeted: “Very sorry to hear about the attack in Kulgam today that claimed yet another innocent life. Deepest condolences & prayers.”

Barely two-and-a half hours after the killing of policeman, a non-local, who was working as labourer, was killed at Nehama area of the district, police said.

An official said that Shankar Choudhary, a resident of Bihar, was shot at by suspected militants at around 8:25 pm at Nehama.

Medical Superintendent District Hospital Kulgam said Choudhary was brought dead to the hospital. A police official said that top officials rushed to the spot and that the area was sealed while a manhunt didn’t yield any result.
