Policeman dad called home to break news of ‘insurgent’ son’s death in gunfight

Ajaz Maqbool, one of the suspected insurgents whose family claims that he was killed in a staged gunfight in the summer capital of Indian-administered Kashmir on Tuesday is the son of a policeman, a local news agency reported.

Ajaz, who is said to be 17-year-old, is the son of Muhammad Maqbool Ganai, a police head constable who is posted in Ganderbal district of Central Kashmir.

Ajaz, and his friend Athar – both from Pulwama district—had left their homes on Tuesday to submit an admission form at the Kashmir University in Srinagar’s Hazratbal.

The families of the duo said “Both were students and had appeared in the Class 11th examinations this year.”

“My brother left for Kashmir University. He called me saying he won’t be able to come home and will stay in Srinagar,” Aijaz’s sister, who was part of the protest outside the Police Headquarters in Srinagar, said. She said: “My brother had backache and was home for two months. He has been killed in a fake encounter.”

It was Ajaz’s policeman father Maqbool Ganai who called his daughter and asked for his photograph. “My father told me that Aijaz has been killed in encounter. We were shocked,” she said amid tears and sobs.
