Police officer injured in Shopian militant attack

A police officer was injured when militants fired at him while he was returning home from a mosque in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

They said the officer has been hospitalized and a hunt launched to trace the attackers.

A police officer said militants fired upon ASI (assistant sub-inspector) Shabir Ahmad while he was coming back from a mosque after prayers in his native place Amishijipora area of the south Kashmir district.

Ahmad is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Srinagar, police said.

The area, where the incident took place, was cordoned off by forces to nab the attackers, he said, adding that the militants managed to flee.

Pertinently, militants on Saturday shot dead a policeman in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir.

J-K Police head constable Ali Mohammad Ganie was fired upon by militants near his residence at Hasanpora in the Tabala area of Bijbehara, Anantnag.

Ganie was shifted to a hospital in critical condition where he succumbed.
