Kashmir policewoman, who slammed army in viral video, arrested and terminated for glorifying militancy

A policewoman has been arrested and terminated from services after a purported video of her slamming the troops of the Indian army while they were conducting a search operation went viral on social media on Thursday.

Special Police Officer, Saima Akther, police say has been arrested for glorifying militancy and obstructing government officials from their duty in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.

In a statement, police said that on April 14, this month, after receiving specific input regarding the presence of militants in Karewa Mohallah of Frisal, a search operation was launched.

“During the course of the search, the search party was obstructed by a woman identified as Saima Akther daughter of Ghulam Nabi Rah resident of Frisal,” the statement noted.

A viral video showed Saima in a confrontation with the armed forces, accusing them of harassing her family on a regular basis.

“The woman resisted the search party and turned violent, and uttered statements glorifying violent actions of militancy. She captured a video through her personal phone and forwarded it on social media platforms with the aim of disrupting the search,” the statement added.

The spokesperson further stated that taking cognizance of the matter, the woman has been arrested and subsequently disengaged from service.

Meanwhile, a local said that Saima is the only daughter of her aged and ailing parents.
“She was posted as an SPO in Jammu Kashmir Police and is the sole bread earner to her family, her father is suffering from cancer,” the local said.
