Kashmir observed a spontaneous shutdown as India observed its 72nd Republic Day on Tuesday. Internet services on mobile devices were suspended in Kashmir to allow Indian military and civil administration carry out functions under unprecedented military cover. People observed a shutdown as a mark of protest against the Indian control. There was scant traffic movement on the roads as most people stayed indoors. Suspension of mobile phone and Internet services on India’s Republic Day and Independence Day has been part of the military drill in the valley since 2005 when militants used a mobile phone to trigger an IED blast near the venue of India’s Independence Day celebrations.
