An Indian army trooper, who was on leave, was shot dead by suspected militants in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Friday.
Officials said that gunmen shot at Territorial Army trooper Mohammed Saleem Akhoon outside his residence at Goriwan in the Bijbehara area of the district. He was shot from a point-blank range in his head, the officials said.
Akhoon was shifted to Government Medical College in Anantnag, whose medical superintendent Dr Muhammad Iqbal Sofi said that the injured had died before reaching the medical facility.
Soon after the killing, the armed forces cordoned off the troopers village and launched a massive search operation but the suspected militants had fled.
