Kashmir: doctor, 3 women among six arrested for abortion of minor rape survivor

A doctor and five of his ‘associates’ were arrested in Jammu and Kashmir for allegedly terminating the pregnancy of a minor girl, who is a rape survivor.

The police acted after a report from ‘Victim Liaisoning Officer’, deputed with the rape survivor in Ganderbal.

The ‘Victim Liaisoning Officer’ in the report noted that the minor was ‘subjected to compulsive delivery of baby by some unknown doctor and that the infant may have been killed during the illegal procedure’.

“Acting on the report, police filed a FIR and initiated investigation in the case,” a police official said.

During the investigation, the police official said: “The girl revealed that her family members took her to accused doctor’s clinic in Sopore where she was subjected to illegal termination of pregnancy.”

The accused, Dr. Ghulam Nabi, a resident of New Colony in Sopore, was arrest, the police official said.

Further leads also led to the arrest of five other persons who assisted Dr. Nabi in performing the operation.

Among Dr. Nabi’s five associates, three women have also been arrested for ‘providing logistic and technical assistance in carrying out illegal procedure nearly at term stage’.

The police official said they expect to arrest more accused in the case.
