India running fake news operation on Kashmir – like the one exposed by EU DisinfoLab – in UK now: British MP seeks action

Claiming that India was carrying out a propaganda operation in the UK, like the one that was recently exposed by a European group, a British Parliamentarian has asked the Boris Johnson government “to take strict action against such false propaganda media outlets”.

In November last, a 15-year-long campaign to “denigrate” Pakistan and Kashmir at international forums was busted by a Europe-based disinformation watchdog.

The EU DisinfoLab exposed a disinformation campaign that targeted the European Union and UN with over 750 fake local media outlets and more than 10 sham non-governmental organizations.

“To do so, they resurrected dead NGOs at the UN. They impersonated the EU. They laundered content produced by fake media to real media – and reached millions in South-Asia and across the world,” the watchdog had said.

British MP Afzal Khan said in a statement: “India was bewildered when dozens of successful Kashmir Solidarity Day programmes were held in Britain and Europe under the aegis of Tehreek-e-Kashmir United Kingdom and Europe.”

Khan, who is Shadow Deputy Leader of the House of Commons, said: “India had tried to thwart the Kashmir Solidarity Conference by attributing false news to Senator Mushahid Hussain, Chairman Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Pakistan, who was a guest at the conference, with more than 40 British parliamentarians.”

But, he said, the series India’s fake propaganda did not stop and it still continues.

Khan, the British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament for the Manchester Gorton constituency since June 2017, said: Kashmir dispute is on the United Nations agenda which needs to be settled as per the UN resolutions to give Kashmiris right of vote to decide about their future.

“It is unfortunate that India is now backing such type of media outlets same like exposed by EU Disinfo Lab to malign the indigenous liberation struggle of the people of  Kashmir whose divided families are also settled in UK and they always come out to express solidarity,” he said.

“To bully the world and the UK government, Indian proxy fake media outlets are trying to hoodwink policy makers in London through their fake propaganda and we want to appeal the government of UK to take strict action against such false propaganda media outlets,” said Khan, who was selected in 2013 on the Labour Party’s list for North West England at the European Parliamentary election of 2014 and, in May 2014, returned as MEP to the European Parliament to represent North West England.
