Hyderpora gunfight: family of civilian says he was ‘used as human shield, killed in cold blood’





The family of a civilian, who was slain during a gunfight between militants and armed forces on Monday in Jammu and Kashmir’s summer capital Srinagar, says he was used as a ‘human shield and killed in cold blood’. 



Altaf Ahmad Bhat’s niece Saima Bhat took to Twitter and wrote: “You killed my innocent uncle Mohammad Altaf Bhat in cold-blooded murder In Hyderpora, you used him as a human shield and now saying he was “OGW”. return us his body.”

Two militants were also killed in an encounter between the ultras and forces in the Hyderpora area of the city on Monday, police said.

The encounter broke out near Classic Hospital when armed forces launched an anti-militancy operation, a police official said.  He said two militants were killed in the gun battle and a civilian also died. 


The civilian Mohammad Altaf Bhat, 44, was a businessman a resident of Old Barzulla locality.

Bhat owned a hardware store and a cement dealership near the scene of the encounter, the official said. 

Bhat, a father of two daughters and a son, was the owner of the complex. Inspector-General of Police (Kashmir zone) Vijay Kumar said the civilian was injured in firing by militants.


Militants have been hiding on the top floor of Bhat’s building. 

As per source and digital evidence, he has been working as a militant associate, Kumar had claimed tweeted.


The slain militants were identified as Sameer Ahmad and Amir. 



The family of Bhat said that he is a civilian and he was not a militant.

“He is innocent. We are protesting at Barzulla demanding the body of our uncle,” the family member said.
