Gunfight in Shopian, top Jaish commander from Kashmir reportedly trapped

A gunfight broke out between militants and government forces on Saturday evening in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district, officials said.

Officials said that a joint team of police, Army’s 34 RR and CRPF launched a Cordon and Search Operation on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

He said that as the joint team of forces approached the suspected spot in Rawalpora village of the southern district, the hiding militants fired upon them, which was retaliated, thus triggering a gunfight.

Sources said that two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area.

A top Jaish-e-Muhammad commander is believed to be trapped in an encounter where an exchange of firing is on. Reports said that Jaish commander Wilayat alias Sajad Afghani, a resident of Rawalpora is reportedly trapped.

The gunfight was going on when the report was last filed.
