Despite heavy security, policeman shot dead in Kashmir capital

Despite heightened security in Jammu and Kashmir owing to the recent target killings, suspected militants struck again in the capital city Srinagar, killing a policeman.

Reports said 29-year-old policeman Tauseef Ahmad was fired upon by the unidentified gunmen in the SD Colony area of Batamaloo in Srinagar from a close range.

Ahmad was immediately rushed to a nearby SMHS hospital where doctors declared him dead. He had served with the anti-insurgency Special Operation Group of the Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Soon after the attack, the armed forces cordoned off the area and conducted searches but the militants managed to flee.

In past two months, Kashmir has seen an escalation in militant attacks particularly since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.
