Kashmir resistance leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Saturday said Maqbool Bhat and Afzal Guru have become “symbols of the freedom movement” in the disputed Himalayan region.
The ailing Geelani said Guru and Bhat represented the sentiments of freedom and sacrifice of Kashmiri people. “On the other hand, their martyrdom is a living testimony to the hollowness of India’s judicial system.”
Geelani said the manner in which Guru and Bhat were executed will forever remain a blot on the face of Indian judiciary.
He called for strike on Bhat and Guru’s respective death anniversaries on February 9 and 11 to “show a mirror to Indian judiciary”.
Bhat and Guru were secretly hanged and buried in New Delhi’s Tihar Jail in 1984 and 2013, respectively.
Successive Indian governments have turned down calls for the return of their mortal remains to families.
