‘Arrest amounts to suppressing voice of voiceless’: APHC, Kashmir Bar demand release of rights activist Khurram Pervaiz

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference was among several groups which on Tuesday condemned the arrest of human rights defender Khurram Pervaiz by India’s National Investigation Agency in an alleged case of militant funding.

The APHC led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq expressed deep anguish over the arrest of Khurram Pervaiz by the National Investigation Agency in Srinagar.

APHC said that the arrest of Pervaiz, Kashmir’s well-known and respected human rights activist has caused great concern among the people.
“Global rights organizations have also expressed shock at his arrest and demanded his release, APHC said while asking authorities to stop its policy of repression on citizens of Kashmir and release Khuram Pervaiz immediately.

His organization, Jammu and Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) which is working on human rights violations in Kashmir has produced and published various scathing reports on human rights violations and exploitation, Kashmiris have been experiencing for years.

In 2016, Indian authorities had arrested Parvez a day after he was barred from traveling to Switzerland to attend the 33rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, and had charged him under the controversial Public Safety Act (PSA), which allows detention without charge for up to two years.

The Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association also condemned his arrest. “It amounts to suppress the voice of the voiceless in Kashmir,” the Bar association said in a statement.

The statement added: “He is implicated in false and frivolous allegations to prevent him from pursuing the cause of justice and reporting human rights violations from Kashmir.”
