Two militants were killed in a military operation in the Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday, police said.
Armed forces launched a cordon and search operation in Hassanpora village of Kulgam district following information about the presence of militants there, a police spokesperson said.
He said the search operation turned into an encounter after militants opened fire on the forces.
Two ultras were killed in the exchange of fire with the forces, the spokesperson said.
He said incriminating materials, including arms and ammunition, were recovered from the scene of the encounter.
Police on Monday claimed to have identified one of the two slain militants.
The slain has been identified as Imad Wani, son of Muzaffar Wani, a resident of Arigam. “He was involved in an attack on police personnel Mushtaq Waggay in Pulwama on 19 December 2021, in which he got seriously injured,” Inspector General of Police said in a tweet.
Military operations against militants in the valley have seen a sudden surge during the past month. As per official records, seven gunfights between militants and the joint team of forces erupted in the first 10 days of 2022.
With the death of two more militants in Kulgam, the tally of slain militants in the valley in the first 10 days of the year has mounted to 13.
