Two policemen were critically wounded when suspected pro-freedom militants attacked them in Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, on Friday.
Reports said bike-borne militants fired at the armed policemen at Baghat Chowk, critically injuring two armed cops.
Doctors at a hospital where the wounded policemen were rushed said that the duo has received firearm injuries in the upper part of their bodies and their condition is critical.
The firing in the uptown Srinagar area triggered panic with the government forces launching a search and cordon operations.
All the shops in Baghat were shut and traffic movement was stopped.
A local from Baghat, who wished not to be named, said the forces have completely cordoned off the area and searches were underway.
Reports said the gunmen escaped after the attack at the Baghat Chowk, which falls on way to the Srinagar Airport.
Insurgent group, The Resistance Front claimed the attack on policemen, saying such “strikes” will intensify in future. “Attacks will intensify with new strategy,” the pro-freedom armed group said in a statement on the social media.
